The holes in the bitumen in the New York city streets would take you down into the depths of the city's underground labyrinth of tunnels, sewers and pipes. The covers of these peopleholes are stunning forms in and of themselves. They vary from cover to cover and reflect the forge that created them and, more commonly now, the utility service they access. Looking for inspiration to nourish me, I walked through the streets of New York City and slowly noticed details underfoot. I was particularly drawn to the metalwork embedded in the pavement and bitumen: steel and iron grates, utility hole covers, cast metal steps and urban metalwork garden edging.
